Roofing & property care in Newport

Newport, east of Howden and just south of the M62, has an unusual origin. In the 1770s the barren Walling Fen was opened up for industry after a deep clay bed was found, and by the 1820s the works here were turning out around 1.7 million tiles and 2 million bricks a year. The village grew along the Market Weighton Canal, and St Stephen's Church followed in the 1890s.

Many houses in and around Newport have roofs that are now long past their best. Advanced Property Care carries out full strip and re-roofs in Newport for homeowners and landlords. We inspect first, tell you honestly whether repairs could still work, and give you a clear written quote with photos before any work begins, so you know exactly what you are paying for.

Roofs in Newport: what we look out for

Newport's housing ranges from 19th-century brick cottages and terraces, some with clay tile or slate roofs, to post-war and modern homes with concrete interlocking tiles. Older roofs often have no underlay, worn battens and nail fixings that have rusted through, leading to tiles slipping across the roof. Mid-century homes frequently have perished bitumen felt that tears at the eaves and lets water reach the wall head.

The village sits on low, flat land with drains and the canal nearby, so it is open to strong winds and damp conditions. Exposed ridges and verges take a beating, and moss thrives on shaded slopes. The old clay workings left water-filled pits around the village, adding to the moist local air. These conditions shorten the life of tired roofs and make a sound, well-ventilated replacement worth having. Homes near the canal and water-filled pits also tend to collect algae on north slopes and roofline boards.

New Roofs & Re-Roofing

New Roofs & Re-Roofing for Newport homes

A re-roof in Newport means stripping the old tiles or slates and felt, checking and repairing rafters, then fitting a breathable membrane, new treated battens and new coverings. We use natural slate, concrete or clay tiles depending on the house and your preference, finish ridges and hips with a dry-fix system, and renew lead flashings at chimneys and abutments.

On older brick cottages we can talk through clay tiles that suit the village's character and its tile-making history. On post-war homes, modern concrete tiles offer a durable, cost-effective option. We check ventilation so the new roof stays dry inside, and photograph every stage so you have a record of what lies beneath. If the old tiles are sound enough, some can be set aside for future repairs to outbuildings or garden walls.

FAQs

Questions from Newport homeowners

Anything else you would like to know? Call us on 07338 612197 and we will happily talk it through.

Can I keep my old clay tiles when re-roofing?

Sometimes. If many are sound, they can be carefully stripped, sorted and re-laid on new membrane and battens, with matching tiles to make up the shortfall. If a high proportion are cracked or flaking, new tiles are more practical. We assess this during the inspection and explain the trade-offs.

How long does a re-roof take?

It depends on the size and complexity of the roof, any timber repairs found once stripped, and the weather. We give you an expected programme with your quote and make sure the roof is protected each night and whenever rain threatens while work is in progress.

Will I need planning permission to re-roof?

Like-for-like re-roofing on a typical house usually does not need planning permission, but listed buildings and conservation areas can be different, and changing materials may need consent. If you are unsure, it is worth checking with the East Riding planning team before work is booked.

Do you remove and dispose of the old roof?

Yes. Stripping the old coverings, felt and battens, and clearing the waste from site, is part of a re-roof. Your written quote sets out exactly what is included, so there are no surprises about skips, scaffolding or making good once the new roof is on.
