Roofing & property care in Scalby

This Scalby is the hamlet on the B1230 within Gilberdyke parish in the East Riding, not the village near Scarborough. Its name comes from Old Norse, meaning Skalle's farmstead, and it was once a township in the parish of Blacktoft, becoming a civil parish of its own in 1866 before being divided between Blacktoft, Gilberdyke and Newport in 1935. Today it is a small, rural place with homes set among farmland.

Advanced Property Care replaces fascias, soffits and bargeboards in Scalby for homeowners and landlords. We inspect the roofline up close, check the timber behind the boards and the condition of the gutters fixed to them, and provide a written quote with photos. If only one elevation or a single gable needs attention, we will tell you. We cover the surrounding farms as well as the hamlet itself.

Roofs in Scalby: what we look out for

Homes in and around Scalby are mostly brick-built houses and farm properties, some with original painted timber fascias and bargeboards, others with UPVC fitted in recent decades. Timber boards that have not been painted regularly often rot along their lower edges and at joints. Bargeboards on gable ends are particularly vulnerable because they catch wind-driven rain and dry out slowly in the damp air of the levels.

The flat, open land around Gilberdyke means homes here have little shelter from the wind, and rain driven against gables soaks into exposed timber. Gaps around old soffits and eaves give access to birds and small animals looking for a dry place to nest. Once inside the roof space they can disturb insulation and leave mess, so sealing these gaps properly is part of a good roofline job. Farmhouses here often have deep eaves and long gables, so there is a lot of exposed timber to maintain.

Fascias, Soffits & Roofline

Fascias, Soffits & Roofline for Scalby homes

In Scalby we remove failing timber fascias, soffits and bargeboards, check and repair the rafter ends, then fit UPVC replacements with ventilation where needed. We usually replace the gutters at the same time so they are fixed securely to the new fascia rather than refitted to it. We can also fit cladding to dormers, porches or gable features.

Where birds have been entering the eaves, we seal the gaps and fit suitable eaves protection while keeping airflow to the roof space. Because nesting birds are protected, this work is planned outside the nesting season if birds are using the eaves. For existing UPVC rooflines, we offer cleaning to remove green algae and dirt. Every job includes photos. We can also box in exposed rafter ends or tidy awkward junctions where an extension meets the main roofline.

FAQs

Questions from Scalby homeowners

Anything else you would like to know? Call us on 07338 612197 and we will happily talk it through.

What are the signs that my fascias need replacing?

Look for flaking paint, soft or crumbling timber, gutters that have pulled away or sag, and gaps at the eaves. Inside, damp stains at the top of bedroom walls can also point to roofline problems. We can inspect the boards closely, probe the timber and confirm exactly what needs replacing.

Do UPVC fascias need any maintenance?

They do not need painting, but they collect dirt and green algae over time, especially in damp rural spots. A periodic clean keeps them looking good. It is also worth keeping the gutters fixed to them clear, as overflowing water stains the boards and soaks the soffits beneath.

Can you replace just the bargeboards on my gable?

Yes. If the fascias and soffits along the eaves are sound, we can replace only the bargeboards. We check the timber beneath, deal with any rot, and make sure the new boards suit the existing roofline in colour and profile so the house does not look patched.

Is the Scalby you cover the one near Scarborough?
